I drove home in something of a fugue state I own a little house in Studio City that I bought with the insurance settlement I got when my father died. I’d had it para-proofed by a company that had carved out a good business offering peace of mind to human homeowners who really didn’t want to have to worry about paranormal criminals.

It had a thin moat around it, barely six inches wide, but the water moved constantly, powered by a pump. Witches, as you know, can’t cross moving water. There were yew wood details and the front and back lawns were planted with society garlic and roses. Kind of gave it a French garden effect. The windows were made of silver-backed glass, like old time mirrors and that had cost me an absolute fortune. The roof tiles were fireproof, which is always good in wildfire- prone Southern California but also made my house less vulnerable to afrits and fire demons. There was a secret exit dug into the floor of my office that led to a tunnel entrance in my back yard. The entrance in my house was protected by a cold iron grate.

If something came for me in my house, they would have a fight.
